Waiting for BC’s IVF Funding Is Risky — Start Your Fertility Journey Now

British Columbia’s government-funded IVF program offers eligible residents one funded IVF cycle per lifetime. While this is an incredible support for many, funding is limited, and many clinics have already exhausted their allocations for the 2025–2026 program year. Waiting could cost you valuable time—especially if you’re 35 or older.

BC's IVF Funding Program

Why Waiting for BC IVF Funding Is Risky?

Fertility evolves over time. After 35, many women may experience a gradual decrease in egg quality and quantity, reducing the chances of conception and IVF success. Relying solely on government funding may mean your window of opportunity closes while you wait for a cycle to become available.

Funding Is Limited and Clinics Are Running Out

The province set aside funding for IVF access through this program, but each participating clinic has a capped annual allocation, and once it’s used up, they cannot submit new applications until more funds are released.

Reports from late 2025 indicate that at least one major clinic (Olive Fertility Centre) had already used up its funding for the year and was no longer able to submit applications for new patients at that time.

Other clinics have warned that long waitlists and high demand could mean funding runs out there as well, and some have even paused adding new people to their waitlists to avoid leaving patients on a list with no funding available.

What Does This Mean for 2026?

Even though the official program year doesn’t end until March 31, 2026, funding allocations can be used up earlier — and in some clinics they already have been.

If a clinic has no funds left in its allocation, it cannot submit your application to the Ministry of Health until more funding is made available or the next funding period begins.

The province has not yet confirmed extended or expanded funding beyond the current cycle, so waiting for the “next round” is uncertain.

Why Does This Matter?

Because funding is limited and in high demand, many hopeful parents are being told to wait — sometimes for 12 months or more before a funded application can be submitted. For some, that delay can put them at risk of missing important age-based eligibility cut-offs, especially women over 35.
