On March 6, 2025, the British Columbia government released new details about the province's publicly funded IVF program. This update outlines the eligibility criteria, application process, and the services covered by the program. It's an important step forward in offering financial support to individuals and couples seeking fertility treatments. In this blog, I'll walk you through the key details of BC's free IVF program.

When does the program start?
BC's publicly funded IVF program is set to commence on July 2, 2025.
What does the program cover?
Eligible residents can receive up to $19,000 for one full IVF cycle. Funding may be applied to any part of a standard IVF cycle, including:
Ovarian stimulation
Egg retrieval / Sperm retrieval
Fertilization
Blastocyst culture
Single embryo transfer (fresh or frozen)
This program may also cover components of a standard IVF cycle using previously frozen eggs. It can also be applied to frozen embryo transfer using previously frozen embryos.
While the funding helps reduce the financial burden, certain costs such as medications and additional embryo storage may still involve some out-of-pocket expenses.
Who is eligible?
Eligibility criteria include:
BC residency with valid MSP coverage
A medical diagnosis of infertility
Age: Applicants must be 41 years of age or younger at the time of application
Health Conditions: Additional guidelines may apply to those with specific medical diagnoses
Since the full details are still unfolding, it is best to consult a fertility clinic for up-to-date eligibility requirements.
What does the application process involve?
Applications will open on July 2, 2025, for treatments scheduled between July 2025 and March 2026. It is important to note that applications must be submitted by a fertility specialist on behalf of eligible patients. Additionally, patients must meet the eligibility criteria and have a medical diagnosis that aligns with the program requirements. This means that if you don't meet the requirements, you may not be eligible for IVF funding, even if you're eager to receive treatment.
Final Thoughts
Many individuals and couples have eagerly awaited the detailed information about BC's IVF Funding Program, as the cost of IVF has been a major barrier to starting or expanding their family. However, fertility clinics are still waiting for further clarity from the BC government on eligibility criteria and the application process. My advice would be to start your fertility journey now instead of waiting for this program to begin. Acupuncture can support your reproductive health and improve the chances of conception during this time. Starting treatment now can set you up for success, whether you're planning to pursue IVF or trying naturally.
