PCOS & Infertility
Acupuncture for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

What is PCOS?

PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. It's a condition that impacts the ovaries and often leads to imbalances in reproductive hormones. While the exact cause isn't fully understood, several factors contribute to its development, including genetics and insulin resistance.

How does PCOS affect fertility?

Unfortunately, PCOS can have a negative impact on the likelihood of getting pregnant. In one study, 72% of women with PCOS reportedly experienced infertility. This was 4.5 times higher than women without PCOS.

PCOS interferes with the regulation of sex hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, and luteinizing hormone (LH). By interfering with the regulation of sex hormones, PCOS decreases the quality of the eggs produced each cycle, making getting pregnant increasingly difficult.

PCOS Treatment Options

It is possible to become pregnant naturally with PCOS. However, reducing the detrimental effects of PCOS may require several lifestyle changes, including diet changes, regular exercise, stress management, and regular acupuncture treatments. In mild to moderate cases, these lifestyle changes may be sufficient to obtain a successful pregnancy without the need for prescription medication.

How Acupuncture Helps Treat PCOS

When used as a treatment for infertility caused by PCOS, acupuncture helps by:
-
supporting healthy ovulation
-
improving egg quality
-
regulating hormones
-
regulating the menstrual cycle

Since acupuncture works with your body to bring about gradual change, multiple treatment sessions are required before any substantial improvements will be noticed. I typically recommend that women with PCOS attend weekly acupuncture sessions for at least three months.

Final Thoughts

PCOS can make it difficult to become pregnant. However, it doesn't need to stand in the way of your fertility journey.

In my practice, I've helped many women overcome the challenges of PCOS to fulfill their dreams of becoming a mother. If PCOS has become a barrier to becoming pregnant, I'd urge you to add acupuncture treatments to your weekly routine. For the best results, be sure to seek help from an acupuncturist with expertise in treating fertility and women's health conditions.
